Kom was born in the Indian state of Kangathei rural village of Manipur, Moirang Lamkhai. Kom attended Moirang Loktak Christian Model High School. She had been very interested in running the 400 meters and throwing the javelin. Dingko Singh, a fellow Manipuri, had won the gold medal at the Asian Games in Bangkok in 1998.
