Early life and family
Literature professor August Coppola and dancer and choreographer Joy Vogelsang raised Cage in Long Beach. He grew up Catholic. Her parents were Italian and German/Polish. In addition to his paternal grandparents, his paternal great-grandparents were immigrants from Bernalda, Basilicata. He is the nephew of Francis Ford Coppola and Talia Shire, and the cousin of Roman and Sofia Coppola, Gian-Carlo Coppola and Robert and Jason Schwartzman.
Marc “The Cope” Coppola and Christopher Coppola are Cage’s two brothers. He went to Beverly Hills High School, which has many famous alumni. To become an actor, he attended UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television. His first non-film acting experience was in Golden Boy at School. He started performing because he “yearned for James Dean From East of Eden, Rebel Without a Cause”. Nothing hit me like Dean did in Eden – no rock, no classical music. It amazed me. That’s what I want to do.
“I’ll show you how to play,” he told his uncle, Francis Ford Coppola, when he was fifteen. “Silence in the car” met her cry. Coppola had already managed Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, Gene Hackman and Robert De Niro by this point. He changed his name to Nicholas Cage to avoid the impression of nepotism as Coppola’s nephew and was inspired by Marvel Comics superhero Luke Cage and musician John Cage.

On the set of The Wrestler, directed by Darren Aronofsky, in 2007, Nicolas Cage was spotted researching the role of the title character. Despite Wood’s efforts to garner Oscar support for Cage, the film was ultimately disqualified due to its late year theatrical release.
